Competition: Design Posters for Yale Van Sinderen Book Collecting Prizes
The Adrian Van Sinderen Poster Competition for the Book Collecting Prizes
PAST WINNING POSTERS
In order to broaden interest and participation in the Van Sinderen Book Collecting Prize competition, the Van Sinderen Committee is requesting design proposal submissions from undergraduate graphic designers for a poster announcing this annual prize.
Deadline for submission of poster design proposals:
4 pm, Tuesday, October 7, 2008.
Submissions should be addressed to Stephen Parks and may be dropped off (clearly addressed and labeled on the reverse with the designer’s name and contact information) at the security desk near the current entry door of the Beinecke Library.
Poster proposals can be rendered as either digital output or ‘handmade’ form (collage or letterpress for instance), but all submissions, other than those intended to be rendered by letterpress, must be readily reproducible by color laserwriter or ink-jet processes.
Poster proposals should be submitted full-sized in two formats: large (maximum 11 x 17 inches, vertical or horizontal) to be used in residential college posting areas; and small (8.5 x 11 inches, vertical) for posting on campus outdoor bulletin boards.
If your submission is chosen, you may be asked to make minor text and design changes to your work, and you will be expected to oversee its production at Yale RIS (or in your College letterpress shop, if that option applies). You should plan to be available to oversee production and to meet the production deadline of 5 pm, Thursday, October 30, 2008.
A prize of $500 will be awarded to the selected entry, plus costs of poster production. The committee reserves the right, however, to decide not to award a prize in the event that none of the entries seems suitable to the competition’s objectives.
Please feel free to contact John Gambell (john.gambell@yale.edu, 432-6531) with questions.

The Adrian Van Sinderen Book Collecting Prizes for Seniors and Sophomores
In order to encourage undergraduates to collect books, build their own libraries, and read for pleasure and education, the late Adrian Van Sinderen, Class of 1910, established in 1957 two prizes, one for seniors ($1,000) and one for sophomores ($700). Prizes for Honorable Mention are occasionally awarded at the discretion of the judges.
In the awarding of these prizes, neither the number of books nor their monetary value is the determining factor. First consideration is given instead to discrimination and judgment in the selection of titles related to the contestant’s interest. The underlying purpose of the competition is to encourage students to build collections characterized by unity of field or subject.
Collections may cover specific subject fields, such as history, biography, or the sciences; they may pertain to a particular interest within one of these fields; they may be formed for their bibliographical features (edition, illustrations, binding, etc.); or they may represent an intelligently chosen nucleus of a general library.
Application forms are available online, at your Master’s Office, or at the reception desk in the Beinecke Library.
Applications must be submitted by 5 pm, Friday, [tbd] January 2009. For more information visit www.yale.edu/printer/vansinderen.
